TREASURE HUNT THE DECISION
Deuteronomy 30:19 “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.”
Have you ever been to a buffet? There is so much food that it is hard to make a decision. You can choose from chicken, baked or fried; fish, fried or broiled; steak, medium, well, or rare; pizza, pepperoni or cheese; potatoes, French fried, baked, or mashed. And don’t mention the desserts—cookies, cakes, pies, and ice cream. I was in the grocery store the other day trying to decide what snack to buy for my children. A man walked passed me and said, “There is so much to choose from. It is hard to decide, isn’t it?” Do you know that researchers at Cornell University surveyed that people make more than 200 decisions a day on food alone?
Each and every day of our lives, we are making decisions. We are making decisions from the moment we get out of bed, until we lay our heads down on our pillows at night. How do we decide, given that we have so much to choose from? Do we choose based on how we feel? How much time we have? Do we close our eyes and say “Ene, mene, mini, mo”? Or do we make choices, because some one told us what to choose? Even society has a tendency to sway us or persuade us into making decisions for us.
I am guilty of this. In my life, I have allowed people and circumstances to decide my life for me. I even chose my career because of the promptings and coaxing of my family. Today, I still have a problem letting my circumstances decide my day. If I am too busy, I won’t take time for myself. I will even make excuses and say, “I’ll make time tomorrow”, but tomorrow never comes. Are you like this?
James 4:14: “Yet you do not know [the least thing] about tomorrow. What is the nature of your life? You are [really] but a wisp of vapor [a puff of smoke, a mist] that is visible for a little while and then disappears [into thin air].
The point is that tomorrow is not promised, and life is too short. If there are dreams and desires and callings that you wish to pursue, the time is now, but YOU have to make the decision—not circumstances, not society, not your friends or your family. Even God wants you to decide. The scripture above says “that he has set before us, life and death, blessing and cursing.” Therefore, you can either choose to stay in dead-end situations, dead-end relationships, or dead-end jobs. You can choose to continue to make excuses and watch other people enjoy their life, or you can do what God says and “choose life”.
The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 4:7 “…we have this treasure in earthen vessels…” Therefore, I am on a treasure hunt. I am on a quest to find that wealth of gifts, talents and desires that God has placed deep down on the inside of me. Will you join me?
Let us choose to live the life that God has intended for us to live, which is abundantly. John 10:10 says “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
Remember the best decision that anyone can ever make is to give their life to Christ.
