TREASURE HUNT
Finding Your Treasure
God’s GPS System – Part 5
GOD”S WORD

“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105

One day, while I sat on the beach, I saw a person walking around in the hot sun carrying a metal detector.  I watched him as he deliberately followed a path, panning and searching for items left by others and then, over the course of time, became buried under the sand.  Can you imagine the treasures that he must have found—earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, money?  Can you imagine how the people who lost these items must feel?  As I continued to watch this person, I noticed that when he would locate an item, he would bend down, pick it up, analyze it, and hide it safely in his pocket. I realized that this person was on a quest, and if he kept diligently searching, he would eventually find the item that would lead him to great riches.

In 2 Chronicles 34, King Josiah is in the process of repairing and restoring the Temple of God. There, in the midst of the demolition, perhaps under rubble, or thrown in a corner, the Book of the Law, (God’s Word) is found.  The Book is then taken to the king and read to him.  2 Chronicles 34:19 says “…when the king heard the words of the Law, that he tore his clothes.” The tearing of clothes signified that the king had distress and regret for allowing God’s word to get lost.  Most importantly, his actions showed his grief, because “they have not kept the word of the Lord, or did according to all that is written in this book.” (2 Chronicles 34:21)

Where is your “Book” today?  Is it buried under mounds of dust on the coffee table?  Is it pushed way back on your bookshelf? Is it thrown in a corner? Or, does it remain zipped up in your Bible case, not to be opened again until the next Sunday service?  Are we so busy rushing from place to place, activity to activity, that we fail to give God’s word the attention that it deserves.  Psalms 119:133 says “Direct my steps by Your word.” We are to be like the man with the metal detector, panning and searching the Word of God each and everyday for jewels, nuggets, and revelation buried deep within the chapter and verses of the pages.  We are to also feel saddened like King Josiah, when we allow a day to go by without reading God’s word. Psalms 119:105 says “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” In order for us to find the treasure that God has for us, then we are to be using God’s word for direction and guidance as we travel on our path to finding our purpose in life.  God requires us to “Study to show ourselves approved…” (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV).  The Greek word for study is spoudazo (spoo-dad-zo), which means diligence.  Just like that man on the beach, we are to be diligent in our search of the scriptures everyday; and as we find what God has for us in His word, let us take it, analyze it, meditate on it, and then hide it in the pockets of our hearts.  Psalms 119:11 says “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” Deuteronomy 11:18-19 (NIV) “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds… Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, and when you lie down and when you get up.”  Open up God’s word today!   If we continue to be constant in our studies, then God will lead us to finding the treasure that we so greatly desire.  Talk to ya next time!  Love ya.
